More than Good Intentions: How a New Economics is Helping Solve Global Poverty, by Dean Karlan and Jacob Appel
An inspiring and informative look at what works and what doesn't, based on results.

Out of Poverty: What Works When Traditional Approaches Fail, by Paul Polak
Lots of innovative ways to help end poverty, including many effective ways for-profit entrepreneurship can help from within the world's poorest nations.

40 Chances: Finding Hope in a Hungry World, by Howard G Buffett
Lots of good ideas. Great to see a good example of a very wealthy individual with a thoughtful, strong sense of social responsibility.
I agree that sustainable agriculture and building up the soil can play a big part, and there are lots of good ideas in this book. I do not agree that GMOs (genetic manipulation) and massive use of pesticides are a sustainable, danger-free part of the solution.

How to Change the World: Social Entrepreneurs and the Power of New Ideas, by David Bornstein
Describes the great potential of social entrepreneurship to help solve persistent social problems with great effectiveness and very low cost. An inspiring and eye-opening book. Comparison Prices.

Changing The Face of Hunger: One Man's Story of How Liberals, Conservatives, Democrats, Republicans and People of Faith Are Joining Forces to Help the Hungry, the Poor, the Oppressed, by Tony Hall
A first hand account by a former US Representative who is also a leader in the fight against hunger and poverty, both domestic and global. He favors people of all different political opinions working together towards very worthy common goals. Comparison Prices.

The White Man's Burden by William Easterly
A thought-provoking, strongly critical analysis of past failures and current pitfalls in foreign aid. Makes a strong case for giving local people opportunities to adapt political and economic development to their local culture and conditions. Easterly makes the claim, disputed by some, that previous aid programs have almost always done more harm than good.

The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time, by Jeffrey Sachs
Outlines a wide range of ways we can help hundreds of millions of people lift themselves from poverty. Sachs is a leader for the Millennium Development Goals that seek to cut global poverty in half by 2015. He has 25 years of experience that includes very influential work in Bolivia, Russia, India and Africa. Comparison Prices.

The Mystery of Capital: Why Capitalism Triumphs in the West and Fails Everywhere Else, by Hernando de Soto
An excellent explanation of the importance of rule of law to protect property and businesses, vital for economic development. It also describes the many obstacles that block hard working, innovative entrepreneurs in developing nations. This book is at times somewhat repetitious, but the basic ideas are extremely valuable and backed up with numerous examples.
