Rising Cost of Food Affects Americans
Food banks hard hit

The rising cost of food affects all of us.

The crisis has led to a 20 percent increase in the number of people seeking help from food banks across the United States. Conversely, these banks have less food to provide because of rising prices. Some organizations have been forced to reduce their efforts from providing relief five days a week to three days a week.

Even while food prices have continued to rise over the last five years, American spending on food banks continues to fall. The amount the government has spent on providing food banks with support has dropped from $242 million in 2003 to $58 million in 2007.
