Hearts & Minds’ End Poverty WalkathonSM

For Immediate Release
Hearts & Minds, a New York City-based nonprofit, had its third End Poverty Walkathon on Sunday, November 8, 2009. Participants walked to help end extreme poverty around the world.

The fourth End Poverty Walkathon will be held in the same location. The date is not set yet. Click here and we will keep you posted.

Why your help is important
Participating walkers help support the most achievable and sustainable program to end global poverty. The program asks each of the wealthy nations to contribute 1.5 percent of their national income (GDP) to end extreme poverty - the same percent given to the Marshall Plan. That changed the course of history for impoverished Western Europe after World War II.

Hearts & Minds’ End Poverty Campaign program is comprehensive and ambitious. It includes free and fair trade, debt forgiveness, disease prevention, micro loans for the very poor to start their own small businesses, and many other social entrepreneurship innovations. All this is helped by a greatly expanded Peace Corps.

These low-cost, proven methods work directly with those in need, bypassing corrupt and inefficient bureaucracies. Solutions of this kind have already helped millions of people lift themselves from poverty.

The New York City event
Those near New York City residents can join Hearts & Minds for the 10K (6.2 mile) walk in Manhattan on the West Side. The route is in the beautiful Hudson River Park along the Hudson River in Manhattan. It includes great views of the river, historic buildings and more.

“We're very excited about these Walkathons,” says President and Founder, Bill Blackman. “They're our biggest events of the year.”

Walkers pass many interesting sights, including sculptures, museums, parks and spectacular views. Every walker receives a guide to points of interest along the way.

People can also participate from anywhere. You can contact them or call Hearts & Minds at 1-212-280-0333 to help organize or just to walk.
